Actually, they sometimes bathe near a village, not necessarily Kaede's. If you read the manga, it shows Kagome in a river claiming that the water is freezing. This is just before the jewel is shattered. Also, in the anime, she may not say the water is freezing but if you look at the first bathe scene, the one where she thinks Inuyasha is peeping at her before they met Miroku and Sango, there is no steam coming of the water and it is obviously a lake. If there is a hot spring near Kaede's village she would have been using it.

The only thing that bothers me is saying there's a hot spring by Kaede's village. There isn't one. There is a river. A very cold river, but no hot spring.

Actually if you pay attention, almost everytime Kagome and Sango bathe {usually near Kaede's village} there is some steam rising from the water.
